Highlands County
Currently County Commissioner Don Elwell is our only representative on the CrimeStoppers
board.  However, Executive Director
A. G. "Chip" Brown, Jr. is asking WINGS tv1 viewers
to consider applying to fill a second seat from our county.  "
We are currently seeking
applications from interested  persons who reside in Highlands County," according to Mr Elwell.
"All the Board Members volunteer their time to help Law Enforcement solve crimes and identify
criminals in our community.  If you have any questions or need further information, please

area districts' earning more than ours.  Add to this
the lack of pay increases, the teachers were clearly
upset.  In the face of the teachers' position, the board
has held fast this week that no increases are being
budgeted. In the meantime, FL Education Assn area
Director Jim Demchak is reported to say that the
teachers union has declared an impasse in the
salary talks

19-yr old Nathaniel Doctor and 18-yr-old Andrew
Davis were busted during a Palm Beach Cty traffic
stop when police noticed both a smell of
marijuana  
and discovered a bucket of protected baby turtles.
The two men are residents of Okeechobee
Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies were flagged down by a
a motorist who was transporting a shooting victim to the hospital.
Deputies responded to the hospital where they made contact
with an adult male being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Deputies were told that the shooting occurred at the Ridgedale
Apartments in Avon Park. Deputies then responded to this location
to continue the investigation.  Initial details indicate the shooting occurred around 1:00am
near
the intersection of South Fairview Terrace and East Cornell Street which is the entrance
into the Ridgedale Apartment complex, an Avon Park Housing Authority property. This
investigation is
ongoing. Anyone with information on this case is requested to call Detective Du’Wayne
Kelly at

New director named for
the Avon Park Chamber
of Commerce

Melissa Hayes worked on getting her office
organized today and starting on Monday, she
will officially begin her duties as the incoming
executive director of the Avon Park Chamber
of Commerce.  Ms. Hayes is a native of Iowa and is a former marketing director at
the Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development
Commission On Hayes' agenda is to get former chamber members interested in
joining again, working on events development, and updating the chamber's
outdated website.
Florida selling more bear permits
than we have bears to hunt!
The licenses for Florida's first bear hunt in 21 years are so popular that the state may
wind up with more bear hunters than bears!  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission,  
approved the controversial hunt but set no limit on the number of licenses that could be
sold. FWC tells
WINGS tv1.com that they sold about 1,400 licenses in the first three
days they went on sale Monday. Permit sales will continue through October 23rd for the
day before the one-week hunting season kicks off

Two survive serious motorcycle accident on
SR 70 just east of US 27
Ray Donald Gates Jr., 58, of Port Charlotte,
who was riding the bike, was taken to Florida
Hospital Lake Placid and then to Tampa Gen.  
Hospital where he was in serious condition.
His passenger, Nancy Gates, 56, of Port
Charlotte, was listed in serious condition at
Florida Hospital Lake Placid.  Truck driver
Michael S. Rossborough, 45, of Lake City, was
not injured.   Rossborough was headed west
on SR 70 while Gates was going east.
When Rossbrough’s truck turned left onto
Lonesome Island Road, the motorcycle hit the
truck’s trailer before it cleared SR 70.
After the impact, the Gateses were thrown
from the motorcycle, which overturned.

presented Senator Denise Grimsley with
the 2015 Legislative Champion Award at
a ceremony held at the Highlands County
Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.  For the 2nd
year in a row, Senator Denise Grimsley

Publix is going to knock down South Sebring store
and build a brand new one as chain continues growth
Late this year or early in 2016,
the South Sebring PUBLIX will
close...for good.  The Florida
food chain will reportedly spend
$3.1-million to build a brand
new grocery store.  According to
papers filed with the local govt.,
the new structure will be 43,510
sq. ft.  PUBLIX is also demolishing
and rebuilding a store in the Keys
and, as reported recently here on
WINGStv1.com, is planning on
building a new store in Lake Placid

Highlands County budget shortfall whittled down a
bit even as property owners' tax estimates arrive
Property owners throughout Highlands County have
been receiving their estimated, or tentative, tax info
statements this week.  These will give people a glimpse
into probable taxes that will be charged by the county, the
school system, and "often-unseen" taxing agencies such
as the South Florida Water Management District.

At the same time, officials County Administrator June Fisher
and Senior Budget Manager, Tim Mechling, have been
working on the initial $139.5-million tentative budget.  As of
today, they have been able to make changes that reduce
an initial $4.6-million deficit, is down to some $3.1 million
